Whether you are a new musician wanting to make elevated music right out of the gate or a seasoned musician ready to take your tracks to the next level, partnering with a music producer is a necessary step of your career. The main difference between backyard artists and ones playing on the radio is a great music producer. If you are ready to get more serious about entering the music business, here are some of our best tips for finding a music producer to work with.

Talk with Musicians in Your Area

Other musicians are a fantastic resource for many things, from determining the best microphone to use at your shows to the best sites to find tracks on. If you know any other local musicians, ask them what producers they have had the pleasure of working with. It’s also good to ask if there are any specific producers you should stay away from. Learning about the music producers directly around the area where you live is a great place to start your music producer search.

Ask Local Studios

What recording studios are in your local area? Give them a call (or shoot them a DM) to ask what producers they work with at the studio. Search around online to see what producers are known for recording there. This basic background research will give you an idea of who is working in your area and who has an established career. The best producers will have long-standing relationships with local recording studios, so if you have the money to invest in high-quality production that is your best bet.

What Other Bands Started in Your Area?

What rappers or bands have come from your local scene? Which music producers did they work with on their way up? Choosing an established music producer with a proven track record is always a safe bet. Someone who helped a local artist to grow will also be more likely to help you on your way up. Many local music producers, even ones who are working with major national recording artists, will take the time to work with local artists that they truly believe in.

Search for Networks

Music producer networks are another easy way to get a list of names to start with. Look around online at some popular music producer networks to see who works in your area. Keep in mind that every producer listed online might not be legitimate or established, so always complete your due diligence.
