Putting together your mixtape is only one step on a long road to being a rap artist. Before you can even compile a few tracks, you have to have some tracks. But what can you write about? What should you be rapping about? No need to wonder, no need to worry. We’ve got you covered in this week’s blog. Let’s get rolling.
Write what you know.
The most common piece of advice for writers of all kinds is to write about the things you are familiar with. However, in practice, this advice is really oversimplified. What you should be doing is writing and rapping about things that are going on in your life; things that matter to you. If you aren’t sure how you’re going to make next month’s rent or whether or not you ever want to get into another romantic relationship, then you already have some hot topics. What matters here is whether or not you’re passionate about the topic. Make it personal and make it something that you think other people may relate to.
Avoid rapping about the same topics as other people.
Lots of rappers talk about the same things without making them personal. This just creates a bland record. If you’re going to write about smoking with the boys, then you need to make sure that you make it special to you. Police brutality is happening all over the country, but what is happening in your neighborhood? If you love your mom, what is it about your mom in particular that makes her the best mother in the world? These are the sort of questions you need to ask yourself to make sure that your nerves stand out in a crowd of millions.
