Elevating your songwriting skills takes hard work. One of the best ways to take your raps to the next level is with metaphors. While you probably remember what metaphors are from English class, here is what you should know about how you can improve your songwriting with them.
A simile is a comparison using “like” or “as.” A metaphor is a comparison between two objects that does not use “like” or “as.” A metaphor is basically swapping out one word for another that has a similar meaning to make a comparison. Confused? Let’s break things down.
For example, take the idea of a car. Cars have wheels, speed, and can go by a wide variety of names, which gives you a great deal of flexibility. Choose one quality that cars are known for having and then think about other words associated with it. For example, talk about how you love to hop on your cheetah after work. While you obviously don’t actually ride a cheetah to and from the studio, the cheetah takes the place of your car.
Why Should You Use Metaphors?
Metaphors are very common in rap songs because they allow the artist to showcase their skill with language and creativity in the lyrics. Metaphors also help to distinguish your style of rap and elevate your tracks. Most rappers who are known for their songwriting skills use similes and metaphors regularly in their work.
How to Add Metaphors into Your Songs
Adding metaphors into your songwriting isn’t as simple as picking which one you are going to use and sliding it into a song. Practice writing out two lines, one where you set the scene for the metaphor and give the listener an idea of where you are heading, and then a second line where you use the metaphor. Next, try to come up with a way for the two lines to rhyme. Don’t be afraid to switch around words to come up with a better flow or rhyme scheme.
