So you’re starting out in your career as an artist. Before you can start dropping the latest hot mixtape or lay down tracks in a studio, you need a name. You could always just use your real name, or try a themed name generator, but either way, you’re going to need a catchy stage name. Here’s some advice for how to find your new stage name.
Make It Special
Whatever persona you’re going for, you want to be sure it stands out. The rap game is a crowded field, and if you’re not trying to make yourself special, then you’re just selling yourself short. Besides making it special, you should try to capture every other element that we are discussing here. Try to project the image that you’re a rising superstar.
Make It Snappy
What does making it snappy mean? For one thing, you want your stage name to be something your fans can think of and not have to take forever to say. This point ties heavily into the next one. Famous poets used to use a technique called syncopation that would help their names and their work stick out. Melody is an important part of your skill set, so why not use it for your stage name too? You could start by emphasizing vowels, but try to keep it short.
Keep It Short
As we said before, it’s important to keep your new stage name as short as possible. It shouldn’t be more than three syllables at most, because even short names are going to be shortened even more in practice. The one syllable name is best, but sometimes you’ll need two.
Make It Mean Something
Lastly, you’ve got to make it mean something. Part of your artistry is displaying your ability to play wordsmith. Impressing fans is how you make your name, right? So, take it one step further and infuse your stage name with some cleverness too. If you use techniques such as symbolism and metaphor in shaping your stage name, you can prove that you’re intelligent.
