Anyone looking to start a career in music is met with challenges and difficulties. Hip-hop is certainly no different. In this ever-emerging industry, you’ve got to know who you are and who your fan base it. Baltimore has a lot of raw talent and rare passion. Time to show Baltimore City and the rest of the hip-hop world what you’ve got. Here are some things to keep in mind as you build your hip-hop career.
You Are Your Brand
Know this business. Know your music. Know yourself. If you look at any your favorite artists, they are more than just their music. The clothes they wear, the people they collaborate with, down to the food they eat — everything should be a display of who you are as an artist. Your fans are interested in your music, for sure, but they want to know who you are underneath the music as well.
Loyalty, Loyalty, Loyalty
If you’ve followed our social media tips and have built up a big enough fan base on different platforms, you’re ahead of the game. Now comes the hard part. Get those fans on Instagram to your show next week. Getting people to click a simple “follow” button is one thing. You’ve got to entice your admirers to see you in person. And pay for those tickets. Generate a loyal fan base. These grassroots fans are everything when starting your career. The more they talk, the more your name is in the streets. The more your name is spread around, the more your mixtape is playing during their morning commute.
Let ‘Em Watch
As we’ve said before, your social media presence is a huge part of your branding and promotion. You want to be as visual as you can. Look to your favorite artists for inspiration. Maybe Kanye’s Instagram is a little sparse (we all saw his Valentine’s Insta-show), but he is in the public eye in more way than just to promote his music. He and A$AP Rocky promote their fashion lines and appear at several events all the time. Go to as many public events as you can. We are living in a golden age of social media technology, and it’s more likely that you’ll be seen before you’re heard. Get your image out there. Be photographed as often as you can. Hold photo shoots to promote your brand. There’s no such thing as too much attention in the hip-hop industry.
