Are Your Lyrics the Best They Can Be?

songwriting

Writing great lyrics isn’t easy, but sharing your experience through the written word is, arguably, the most important aspect of hip-hop and rap.

Hip-hop and rap have never been as popular as they are right now. With talent and hard-work, many artists have risen through the ranks and become the moguls they are today. What makes them as successful as they are? Production, of course, plays a lot into why an artist’s song hits the top of many music charts, but lyrics are also very important. Your lyrics are what makes people pause and then laugh out loud.  They’re what make people lay in bed at night, knowing that someone else in this world understands what they’re going through. Writing great lyrics isn’t easy, but sharing your experience through the written word is, arguably, the most important aspect of hip-hop and rap. Let’s explore some ways in which you can perfect your writing process and produce some truly remarkable lyrics.

Create a Concept

Coming up with a concept is easier said than done. Whenever inspiration strikes, jot that idea down on paper or on your phone. Think about the artists you admire most. What are they writing about? What is it about their lyrics that you find so attractive or stimulating? Kanye talks a lot about himself, his relationships, and his family. But what he has that made him the mogul that he is today is his sense of humor. If you can think of a concept and add some humor to it, let the words flow and see what comes.

Find Time to Write

Finding time to write is also a huge part of the battle. But once you’ve got your concept down, lock yourself in your room. Turn your phone and laptop off. Put them away. You’re an artist, and this is your art. Give yourself time to let your lyrics naturally flow out of you. The only way you can connect with fans is by being your authentic self. There’s no wrong answer when writing your feelings and thoughts. Hip-hop kings like Biggie wrote about where they’re from and the city that made them. Use this idea of pride for your home without being too alienating. There’s a reason Biggie’s songs resonated with people all over the world, not just New Yorkers. Harness your pride, but look to rap and hip-hop giants for lyric tips and ideas.
