4 Things You Should Never Do in the Studio

A major milestone for singers and musicians is going to the recording studio

A major milestone for singers and musicians is going to the recording studio. There is tremendous excitement that comes when you are close to realizing your dreams. This is a big step: recording your music, fine-tuning it, and getting it ready to share with all of your fans. Here are some tips to help you make the most of the time you have in the studio.

Don’t bring an entourage

When you come to the studio, show up with only the people who are essential to the music. Don’t bring along a group of your best buddies, family members, or a whole bunch of your biggest fans who just want to hang out. They will distract you and everyone else from getting anything done. Stay focused while you are in the studio so you can make your best music. Party with your crew afterward.

Don’t be vague

You should have a good idea of the type of sound that you want to achieve. The sound and recording engineers are there to help you make that happen. If you don’t give them precise direction, they will mix the sound but the result may not be what you had in mind. You don’t want to go in there and waste time by saying something like, “Just choose whichever tracks you like.” Be specific. Think it through beforehand so you are prepared to guide the process. The sound engineers will use their expertise to deliver the recording you have envisioned when you are able to explain it.

Don’t be late

Even the biggest stars know that time is money. You booked the studio time and everyone else is there, ready and waiting for you. Be considerate of them and their time and respect the schedule. It isn’t cool to stroll in an hour late. Even rock stars realize that music is a business. The sooner you understand that the better off you will be.

Don’t expect a free lunch

You are in the studio to make music. If you are expecting to see huge buffet laid out for you along with an open bar, you are going to be disappointed. Eat a little something before you arrive, and when you finish the recording, go out and celebrate at your favorite bar or restaurant.
