3 Tips to Help You Develop Your Sound

Develop Your Sound

As an artist, it is important to have your own unique sound. We have a couple of tips to help you create your own unique sound.

As an artist, it is important to have your own unique sound.  Today, there are thousands of artists trying to make it in the music world and it can be tough to make yourself stand out. But how do you accomplish that?  We have a couple of tips to help you create your own unique sound.

Follow Your Influences, But Don’t Plagiarize

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but not for musicians.  Successful artists spend years developing their own unique sound, so if you just copy another artist’s work it’s literally stealing.  If you have artists you’d like to emulate, that is completely different.  Just be careful.  Know your material. If you write something that’s along the same lines as someone else’s stuff, make sure it’s not the same.  You want to create YOUR sound, not take someone else’s.

Don’t Be Afraid to Fail

Failure is inevitable.  Without failing, real growth is impossible.  The trick is to not let the failure bother you.  Instead of letting setbacks hold you down, learn from them.  Did your demo get rejected by everyone you sent it to?  That’s okay! Listen to it, several times if you have to, and figure out what they didn’t like about it.  Developing your sound is not something that happens overnight.  Be patient with yourself.  Let the setbacks teach you to be better.

Be Consistent Without Being Repetitive

In the early 2000s, there were “pop-punk” bands.  These bands each broke out with a single that everybody listened to a million times, but these singles came off of albums.  When listening to the albums, though, listeners found that all the songs generally sounded the same.  This is exactly what you don’t want.  An album should have a tone, a general story that it tells either about the artist or a story the artist wants to tell.  It should not be 10-15 tracks of saying the same thing 50 different ways.
