Your goals are sky high, but refining and setting concrete career goals can help to make them a reality. Ready to get serious about taking over Baltimore’s rap scene? Here are three easy steps for setting realistic goals for your rap or hip-hop career.
Know Who You Are
If you are a very specific niche of rap or hip-hop, your fan base and limit will obviously be much lower than someone who makes more industry-friendly music. That isn’t to say that you can’t change the game, but it does mean that your goals should be more specific or tailored to your audience. If part of your sound and style is unique but also more adaptable to other genres and audiences, consider developing it to get a broader reach.
Lists are a great way to keep track of lots of goals at the same time. You can even make multiple lists for all of the building blocks that will lead you to your ultimate goal. There is nothing wrong with having one to-do list for this year and another goal list for ten years down the road when you’re walking the red carpet! Be realistic about where your career is now and where you want it to go. Next, make another list that logs your finances so far. We often suggest setting two core career goals, one set that are financial in nature and another that are more achievement-oriented (winning a certain award, releasing 3 albums, etc.).
Learn from Your Predecessors
As the saying goes, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Learn from those around you in the music industry and your personal heroes. Instead of copying what they did exactly, come up with a way to integrate some of those lessons into what you want to do! Set achievable and realistic career goals that encourage you to push yourself, but that don’t discourage you if you fall short.
